Crop Progress Report for the Week of September 18, 2017

Corn is finished with the dough stage and continues through denting and maturing.  Corn dented is at 86% overall now with NC reporting 100% dented.  Progress remains behind 2016’s progress by 6%.  Every state except for WI (67%) is reporting over 70% dented.  Corn mature is now at 34%; this is 16% behind the progress in 2016.  Every state is now reporting at least 10% mature with NC reporting 93%.  CO, IA, MI, and OH are the most recent states to begin their corn harvest and are reporting 1-3% harvested through this past week!  Yet to begin harvest for the season are MN, ND, SD, and WI.

Soybean harvest has now started!  Overall, the harvest is 4% finished; on track with 2016’s progress and only 1% behind the five year average.  LA is over halfway through with harvest already at 63% harvested.  This progress is 21% ahead of 2016’s progress for the state!

Cotton bolls opening are now at 44% overall, this progress is behind previous years.  AZ and LA are the only states reporting over 90% progress.  Cotton harvest is at 11% overall, this progress is ahead of previous years by 5%!  AL, GA, and MS have started their cotton harvest through the week and are reporting 1-2% harvested.  Cotton condition degraded; we saw a 2% decrease in good condition, and a 1% decrease in fair condition for an increase of 1% in poor condition and 2% very poor condition.

Sugarbeet harvest is at 10% overall; 1% behind 2016’s progress and 1% ahead of the five year average.  ID saw the most progress through the week with 13% harvested.

Sorghum coloring is at 84% overall, all states are reporting at least 70% colored.  This is ahead of the five year average by only 1% and behind 2016’s progress by 3%.  Sorghum mature is at 43% overall with AR nearly fully mature at 97%.  Sorghum harvest is now at 29% overall; this progress is the same as in previous years for this time of year.  CO and SD have yet to start harvest while IL, NE, and NM started their harvest this week and are reporting 1-2% harvested.

Peanut harvest is at 6% harvested; a 3% increase through this week.  This progress is behind the progress in previous years by 1-2%.  FL is leading the harvest with 18% harvested and progress of 5% through the week.  Peanut condition is now at 0% in very poor condition!  This, along with a 4% decrease in excellent condition, lead to an increase of 3% in good condition, and 2% in fair condition.

Rice harvest is over halfway at 55% harvested!  LA and TX are nearly finished at 95% and 96% harvested.  MO made the most progress through the week with 20% more harvested and AR close behind with 18% more harvested.

Spring wheat harvest is finished for 2017!

Winter wheat planting is at 13% overall with only IL remaining to start planting.  WA has the most progress at 43% planted so far, SD is reporting 30% planted, all other states are reporting less than 25% planted at this point.  This progress is 2% behind progress from previous years.
