Crop Progress Report for the Week of August 27, 2018

Corn in the dough stage reached 100% in MO this week!  Overall progress is at 92% in the dough stage.  This progress is ahead of that from previous years by at least 7%.  Only NC is behind their progress from previous years and NC is reporting 97% in the dough stage at this time.  Corn dented surpassed the halfway point to reach 61% this week.  This progress is ahead of previous years by 19%!  NC is nearly finished at this stage with 91% dented.  Corn mature is now included in the report and is at 10% overall.  So far, this is ahead of previous years by 5%.  Nearly all corn states are reporting corn mature.  MN and PA are reporting 0% mature and this progress is the same as it was in 2017 for this time of year.  In 2017 CO, MI, SD, and WI reported 0% mature by this time of year but these states are all reporting at least 1% of their corn crop mature.

Soybeans setting pods are at 95% overall with IL most recently reporting 100%!  The overall progress is ahead of 2017 by 3%.  Soybeans dropping leaves are now at 7%, ahead of 2017 by 2%.  Most states except for IA and MO are reporting soybeans dropping leaves.

Cotton setting bolls are at 91% overall.  This progress is the same as the five year average but behind 2017 by 1%.  KS is reporting 88% cotton setting bolls, this is higher than 2017’s progress by 35%!  Cotton bolls opening are at 21% overall with only CA reporting 0%.  LA has the most progress at 67%; this is ahead of their progress from previous years by over 20%. 

Sorghum headed is nearly finished at 93% overall.  Only NM and OK are reporting under 90% headed.  Sorghum coloring is over the halfway mark at 55% overall.  AR will likely be the next one to reach 100% since they are reporting 97% this week.  Sorghum mature is at 27% overall with AR and LA over 90% mature and TX at 71% mature.  Sorghum harvest has started and is at 20% overall.  AR, LA, and TX are the only states harvesting now.  This is on par with progress from previous years.

Peanuts pegging have reached 100%; peanut harvest may be starting within the next few weeks.
