Posted by Colson Steber on 04/23/2019

Corn planting is now at 6% with MI, MN, ND, PA, and SD the only states to not start planting yet.  Compared to the progress from 2018, none of these states were planting by this time of year.  On the other hand; IA, OH, and WI are planting (1-4% progress) now where in 2018 they had not started planting by this time of year.  TX has the most progress with 59% planted.  Looking at the five-year average, all states have been planting corn by this time of year.  In the five-year average and last year, NC was around halfway planted for this time of year but this year is reporting only 28% corn planted.

Soybean planting has started for 2019!  On average, only 1% of the soybean crop has been planted so far.  LA and MS are reporting the most progress with 16% planted.  Last year these states had 25-28% planted and in the five-year average they had at least 30% planted for this time of the year.  The only other states that have started planting are AR, KY, and TN.  All of which are reporting 1-6% planted.

Cotton planted is now at 9%.  AZ has the most progress with 40% planted.  The average progress across the cotton states is 9% which is the same as the five-year average.  However, the five-year average shows all states except for KS and NC planting by this time of the year.  AR, LA, MS, and VA are not planting cotton yet and these states have at least started planting by this time of year according to the five-year average.

Sorghum planting is now at 17% with only TX and OK planting.  TX has already surpassed the halfway point at 57% planted and OK is reporting 4% planted.  In 2018 TX was reporting 76% planted and OK was reporting 8% planted for this time of year.

Rice planting is at 31% overall with all states but CA planting.  Overall progress is behind previous years by 16%.  Based on the five-year average, AR, LA, and TX would already be through at least half of their planting.  AR is reporting 24% planted, LA is about on track with their five-year average with 82% planted and TX is behind with 64% planted.

Peanut planting has started!  Overall progress is at 2% planted with AL, FL, and GA the only states planting so far.  FL is already at 13% planted which is ahead of 2018 and the five-year average!

Sugarbeet planting is at 14% overall with ID reporting 70% and MI reporting 12% planted.  MN and ND have not started planting yet.  MN and ND were not planting for this time of year last year, but, according to the five-year average, MN and ND had at least a quarter of the crop planted by this time of year.
