Crop Progress Report for the Week of May 13, 2019

All states are now planting corn for the 2019 season!  The most recent state to begin their corn planting was SD which is now at 4% planted.  NC has the most progress with 88% planted.  Only KY, NC, TN, and TX are over halfway planted.  All states are behind their five-year average.  The overall progress is behind by 24% at 33% planted.  Corn has emerged in almost every state.  Corn has yet to emerge in MI, ND, and SD.  Overall corn emerged is at 10% with the five-year average at 29%.

Soybeans are being planted in all states except for SD.  SD reported 4% planted for this time of year, last year.  MN is the most recent study to begin planting their soy and is reporting 3% planted.  According to the five year average, MN has had 36% planted by this time of year.  LA has the most progress at 53% planted and is the only state reporting over 50% planted.  Last year, at this time of year, LA was reporting 85% planted.

Cotton planting is at 26% overall which is behind the progress from past years by 6-8%.  CA is nearly finished with planting at 90% planted.  AL, CA, GA, NC, TX are reporting progress ahead of their five-year average.  AR and MO are furthest behind their five-year average, behind by 35 and 40%, respectively.

Rice planting surpassed the halfway mark this week at 55% planted.  Overall, the five-year average for rice planting is 82% for this time of year.  LA is nearest to finishing with 90% planted.  Rice has emerged in all states with CA reporting 0% last week and 5% this week.

Sorghum planting is at 24% this week with CO and SD yet to plant.  KS and NE have less than 10% planted and TX is nearing the close of planting at 75% planted.

Peanut planting is at 40% this year, ahead of their five-year average!  FL has hit the halfway point at 50% planted.  FL is also the state furthest ahead with planting.  GA and SC have the second most progress with 47% planted.

Sugarbeet planting is nearly finished in ID at 97% planted.  MI is furthest behind with 46% planted and, at this time of year last year, MI was reporting 83% planted – second furthest planted.  Overall sugarbeet progress is at 63%; behind progress from previous years by 17-18%.
