Crop Progress Report for the Week of July 8, 2019

Sunflower planting has finished.  Soybean and sorghum planting continues but is nearing the end for the season.

Corn emerged is nearly at 100% (which is usually already at 100% for this time of year) at 98% emerged.  All corn states are reporting at least 90% emerged.  Corn silking is now included in the report.  Overall progress is at 8% where in 2018 it was at 34%.  MI, MN, ND, OH, SD, and WI have yet to report any corn silking this year.  KY, MO, NC, TN, and TX are reporting between 19-73% silking already.  Other states are reporting under 5%.

Soybean planting continues at 96% planted with ND and NE recently finishing their planting this week.  Other states are reporting at least 90% planted.  Soybeans emerged are at 90% overall with LA now reporting 100% emerged.  Last year the overall progress was at 100% for this time of year but there are still some states reporting only 75% emerged (OH in particular and their 2018 progress was 100% for this time of year).  Soybeans blooming are now included in the report and are at 10% overall.  MI and WI have yet to report any soybeans blooming but other states are reporting at least some soybeans blooming.  Overall progress is behind 2018 by 34%.

Cotton squaring is at 47% overall.  Cotton setting bolls is at 13% with KS, MO, and OK reporting 0% setting bolls.  KS was reporting 0% last year but MO was reporting 29% setting bolls last year for this time of year.

Sorghum planting is nearly finished but at 97% this week.  NE and SD finished their planting this week.  CO, KS, and OK are the states that will finish up planting likely in the next week or two.  Sorghum headed is at 22% with TX reporting 62% (on track compared to previous years).  CO and SD don’t have sorghum heading yet and the other states are reporting between 5-11% headed.  Sorghum coloring is now included in the report and is at 13% overall.  Only TX has sorghum coloring and their progress is at 45%.

Peanuts pegging are at 58% this week with all states now reporting peanuts pegging.  Most recently is TX now at 2% pegging where they had 19% in 2018 for this time of year.

Rice headed is at 16% and MO has yet to report rice heading.  AR most recently reported rice heading at 3%.  LA and TX are the only states reporting at least 50% headed.
